In August 1965, Shanghai Tunnel Project Company was officially established in former Shanghai Municipal Council on Hankou road. At first, it was a secret military unit researching for large tunnel and high-end equipment, with designation “4046”.
1965Starting Point
In 1965 when China largely promoted national defense development, “Shanghai Tunnel Project Company”, the predecessor of STEC, was established. It became the founder of soft soil tunnel in China, and led the country’s tunnel industry for decades.
1995A Bold Idea
In 1993, STEC, leading infrastructure contractor in China, succeeded in listing the company, thanks to the market reform policy. It became the first listed share-holding company and also the leader in the infrastructure industry in China. This also instilled new meaning to STEC’s culture for shareholders, public and employees.
1996A Bigger World
In October 1996, Shanghai Urban Construction was established under the circumstance of separating government and company role of Shanghai Municipal Engineering Administration. STEC joined Shanghai Urban Construction officially and became its only listed platform. In the next five years, as the top enterprise in China municipal engineering, Shanghai Urban Construction injected top quality assets to STEC including its Urban Construction Design Institute, Tunnel Design Institute, No.1 Municipal Engineering Company, No.2 Municipal Engineering Company, Road and Bridge Company etc., which represent the top level of planning, investment, design and construction of municipal engineering projects in China. Greater resources, teams and platforms expanded STEC’s businesses to all areas of infrastructure in terms of urban roads, bridges, tunnels, rail transports, and architectures. It was STEC’s first time to step out of Shanghai, taking on the world, and transforming into a large-scale integrated infrastructure enterprise.
2009Broader Stage
In 2009, Shanghai Urban Construction Group advanced to focus on a new platform, besides being “the best general contractor”. The scale multiplied, as a result of the World Expo. Shanghai Urban Construction Group started to re-examine and integrate its own industry resources to deepen and adjust industry structure and market distribution, to expand markets and business and to strengthen control and speech in the industry chain. It built an embryonic model on industry chain of infrastructure for the new STEC today. A new transition was underway...
2011New Target
In 2011, Shanghai Urban Construction Group officially unveiled new reform and transition. Shanghai Urban Construction Group injected its core assets into STEC and finished the listing and restructuring efforts. The total capital volume of STEC rose from 733 million to 1.285 billion shares. It laid an important foundation for Shanghai Urban Construction Group to be completely listed as a new STEC by the platform of old STEC. In 2013, with the involvement of Shanghai Municipal Maintenance & Management Co., and the Pujiang Tunnels Operation Management Co., they brought more than 90% operation and maintenance business of fast road network in Shanghai to Shanghai Urban Construction Group. It accelerated the forming of whole industry chain with infrastructure investment, construction, operation and maintenance of the Group. Shanghai Urban Construction Group officially announced to switch to an “Urban Infrastructure Integrated Service Provider”. Shanghai Urban Construction Group tried to look upon the development of cities and the company from a more comprehensive and sustainable development perspective. Shanghai Urban Construction Group changed business schemes, created value and started a transformative journey with the new position secured by integrated advantage in market.
